The borderline betwen hands-on and formal knowledge

Usually, we can see peoples trying to establish a border line between hands-on knowledge, and formal knowledge. This is an honest mistake since people forgot, that formal knowledge is just a result of the process in which knowledge has been accumulated in previous hands-on experiences. Someone may talk about business, as an example of an activity where the learn-by-doing is kind of a rule, but even in business the poles of excellence (I assume that strategy consulting companies are a good example at here), are built under an intense knowledge accumulation and formalization process. Then, under this perspective, we can infer that the formal knowledge access stage, is just a step that allows us to avoid mistakes that have been made in previous hands-on process, conducted by other agents.

We can see the whole idea if we think that there are no prototypes in real scale of ships, so that’s a process that does not allow mistakes. Then in this kind of industry, be able to access previous formalized knowledge is vital.
